Fan Fiction Week 7– Love is in the Air

Love is in the air! It was “Valentine Week”and you could tell just by reading the latest list of stories. There were several websites and blogs doing secret Valentines and Armitage’s Army was among them. I got a beautiful secret Valentine that I am now using as my header. But back to the Love Stories.

Zeesmuse is writing a prequel to Rider of the Mark, one of my favorite stories or hers. It’s written 21 years before the War of the One Ring. Fan Fiction — Weekly Round -Up Week Sex–er–Six

This week we’re taking off in the way-back machine. I saw a few comments while I was perusing the planet, investigating the Internet, browsing the blogs. It seems there are some fans who haven’t read about John Porter, or John Portah to long-time fans. So I thought I start off by listing a few stories about our favorite British soldier. Some of them are a couple of years old, but they are really good. I wish the authors would write some more. So, if you haven’t read John Porter I hope you enjoy the stories I’ve picked for you. Next stop in our journey into the past is John Standring, and his part in Sparkhouse, the modern retelling of Wuthering Heights with a bit of a twist. There’s been a bit of chatter about the characters, but I’m going to let you make your own decisions. I’m just here to give you a list of stories to read.

I think I’m humped with this blog.  I haven’t had a recommendation in weeks, sometime in early October.  I’ll keep it going until the end of November then I’ll re-evaluate.  I can’t say I didn’t try.

November 17, 2013 Reading

Thought for Today: “Since others have to tolerate my weaknesses, it is only fair that I should tolerate theirs.” — William Allen White, American journalist (1868-1944).  He bought the Emporia, Kansas Gazette in 1895 for $3,000 and it is still run today by his great-grandson William White Walker.

I have a weakness for reading.  I will read anything and I mean anything.  I read catalogs cover to cover.  I’ve read encyclopedias,  A-Z.  There’s not much happening in the book of Q, that’s why they usually stick it in P’s or R’s book.   It saves printing time and ink.  Same with X and Z.  Y?  Because I said so.  That’s Y.  Ha, ha.  That’s my alphabet joke for the day.

What would we do without letters?  I would have a hard time reading, that’s for sure.  Writing.  I couldn’t write to you.  You couldn’t write a story for me.  We’re in a fast-paced world.  Take time out to sit down and write.  I promise you I’ll read it, especially if it’s an illustrated catalog.

November 16, 2013 — You still have time!

The Desolation of Smaug, the second movie in Sir Peter Jackson’s Trilogy of The Hobbit is due out in about 27 days.  I say about, because it’s sooner or later, depending what part of the world you live in.

I have since found out there are people in the world who still haven’t read The Hobbit, although it was written in 1937.  They are basing all their knowledge of J.R.R. Tolkien on Sir Peter’s movies.  I have his movies on DVD.  I have the Rankin/Bass cartoon on my computer.  I also have the books in print and on my Ebook.  In fact I have all of Tolkiens’ books on my Ebook.  That includes The Children of Hurin, The Silmarillion, and the 12 volumes of the Lost Books.  On another day I’ll take you on a journey of the Lost Books.  They are a blog all their own.

Today I want you to know you can still get The Hobbit to read before the Desolation of Smaug comes out.  You can find it here:

For a mere $250 you can “Buy It Now” on Ebay. (It may be a 1st Edition, but no,  thanks, anyway.)

$30 will get you an illustrated version at the Book Depository. (Maybe, depends on the illustrator.)

There’s a used 5 book boxed set with The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings for $2.40 at Barnes and Noble.  (They mention it’s in fairly good condition.)

Target has a Spanish language version ‘El Hobbit‘ for $21.80.

So there’s still time to read The Hobbit before you jump into the fray!  Some of  us Tolkien fans think Sir Peter has done a great job with The Hobbit.  Some of us Tolkien fans think Sir Peter has done not so great a job with The Hobbit.  I’m one of the fans who think Sir Peter …you know what, you should decide for yourself.

It was a busy day in our house yesterday.  I wrote a few more page of my novel, I watched the Extended version of The Hobbit, and Orcrist my mate played his new game Call of Duty-Ghosts.  We were happy campers.  Now if I could just get someone to do the laundry I’d be golden.
